THE FOUNDATION
Yoga is not a practice of the body alone. It is a state of integration - a way of being in which the fluctuations of the mind come to rest, and the awareness that remains is clear, steady, and whole. The word 'yoga' comes from the Sanskrit root yuj, meaning to yoke or unite.
In Patanjali's Yoga Sutras, the foundational text of classical yoga, the practice is defined simply: Yogaścittavṛttinirodhaḥ - 'Yoga is the cessation of the movements of the mind.'
This is why we practise - not to become something else, but to uncover what was always here. Yoga is not an escape from life. It is the full celebration of it.
THE PATH
Patanjali's Yoga Sutras outline the Ashtanga - the eightfold path of yoga. These are not sequential steps, but interconnected dimensions of practice that inform and support one another.
Yama - Ethical restraints: non-violence, truthfulness, non-stealing, moderation, non-possessiveness
Niyama - Personal observances: purity, contentment, discipline, self-study, surrender
Asana - Posture: steady, comfortable seat for meditation
Pranayama - Breath regulation: refining the life force
Pratyahara - Sense withdrawal: turning awareness inward
Dharana - Concentration: focused, single-pointed attention
Dhyana - Meditation: sustained, effortless awareness
Samadhi - Absorption: union with the object of meditation
At Brahmaki, these principles guide not only how we teach, but how we live. Our trainings and retreats are designed to embrace each limb - through practice, reflection, and direct experience.
THE TRADITION
At Brahmaki, our practice is rooted in Vinyasa, Hatha, and Ashtanga - traditions that meet the body through breath, sequence, and stillness. Our Ashtanga approach is inspired by Black Lotus, the teaching of Ty Landrum: a practice shaped by precision, devotion, and the quiet intelligence of the body.
We do not claim a single lineage. We respect the traditions from which our practice has emerged and believe in living transmission - the passing of knowledge from teacher to student, through relationship, presence, and embodied experience.
Yoga is not a static system to be preserved, but a living tradition to be engaged. It asks us to study, to practise, to question - and ultimately to find our own authentic expression within the framework of what has been passed down.
LIVING YOGA
The true measure of our retreats and teacher trainings is not what happens on the mat, but what remains once it is rolled away. Our goal is for every person who leaves us to carry a real, embodied knowledge of yoga - not only asana, but its philosophy, breath, ethics, and quiet disciplines of attention.
Yoga is not a retreat from the world. It is a way of meeting it - with clarity, presence, and ethical integrity. The Yamas and Niyamas, the subtle work of pranayama, the steadying of concentration: these are tools for right relationship with ourselves, with others, and with the world around us.
This is where yoga becomes a lived philosophy - not an abstract ideal, but a daily practice of awareness, choice, and alignment. We teach so that these threads stay with you long after the closing circle: in how you breathe, speak, rest, and return to yourself.
SACRED TEXTS
The Bhagavad Gita, one of yoga's most beloved texts, describes four classical paths - each suited to a different temperament, yet all leading toward the same goal: liberation from suffering and the recognition of our true nature.
Karma Yoga - The path of selfless action. Serving without attachment to outcome. Offering every act as an expression of devotion.
Bhakti Yoga - The path of devotion. Love as the vehicle for transformation. Surrendering the heart to something greater than the self.
Jnana Yoga - The path of knowledge. Self-inquiry and discernment. Asking “Who am I?” until only truth remains.
Raja Yoga - The path of meditation. Direct experience of stillness. The systematic refinement of mind and perception.
At Brahmaki, we honour all paths. Our offerings integrate knowledge, devotion, service, and meditation - meeting each practitioner where they are, and supporting them in their unique unfolding.
SISTER SCIENCE
Ayurveda, yoga's sister science, translates as 'the knowledge of life.' Where yoga works with the mind and consciousness, Ayurveda attends to the body and its rhythms. Together, they form a complete system for living with awareness, balance, and vitality.
At its heart, Ayurveda recognises that each person is unique. We are born with a particular constitution - a blend of elements that shapes our physical form, our temperament, and our tendencies. Flourishing arises when we live in harmony with this nature, honouring what nourishes us and releasing what depletes.
By caring for the body and nervous system in this way, we create the conditions for deeper practice. A well-nourished body is a steady seat. A calm nervous system is an open channel. When the physical foundation is tended, the mind settles more easily into stillness.
INNER ALCHEMY
At its core, yoga is a system of purification - sadhana - designed to refine the body, breath, and mind. This is not about becoming pure in a moralistic sense, but about clearing the obstructions that prevent us from seeing clearly.
The practices work on every layer of our being: the physical body through asana and kriyas, the energetic body through pranayama and bandha, the mental body through concentration and meditation. Each layer supports the next.
As the impurities dissolve - tension, distraction, reactivity, restlessness - what remains is light. Not something we have created, but something that was always there. This is the promise of yoga: not transformation into something new, but revelation of what has always been.
“The light is already there. Yoga is simply the process of removing what obscures it.”
STILLNESS
All the practices of yoga - asana, pranayama, ethical living, study - are ultimately preparation for one thing: stillness. Not the forced stillness of suppression, but the natural stillness that arises when the mind is clear, the body is at ease, and awareness is undisturbed.
This is why we begin with the body. Not because the body is the goal, but because a restless body creates a restless mind. We work with the breath because breath and thought are intimately connected. We study the texts because understanding provides a map for the journey.
And when the preparation is complete - when the body is steady, the breath is calm, and the mind is focused - something else becomes possible. Not through effort, but through allowing. Not through doing, but through being.
This is the invitation of yoga: to prepare the ground, and then to rest in what is revealed.
